Auto insurance is a necessity of having a car on the road. Most car owners understand that insurance payments are just something that needs to get tacked onto the monthly budget along with your car payment. But if you feel like you've been giving up a lot of money for insurance every month and you've never even come close to getting into a wreck, you might be thinking of ways you can lower your obligation. Here are a few tips that might help.

1. Reduce Insurance on Your Older Car

If your car is getting up there in years, you might want to take a close look at all of the optional insurance you are carrying. You need to keep the car legal for the road of course but if your car is showing its age, the insurance might no longer be worth it. If you total a really old car, you might be financially better off just buying another used vehicle as a replacement. Consider dropping collision coverage or whatever you can legally get away with. Just don't go overboard and put yourself in a situation where you will actually be hurting if you do get in a wreck.

2. Keep Full Coverage But Increase Your Deductible

If you have a newer car, you might still want some of the optional additions to your insurance policy. But it might be possible to keep your coverage while also increasing your deductible, the amount you have to pay out of pocket if you file a claim. Don't increase it to a level you will not be able to afford, but go ahead and push your luck a little bit. You are essentially betting that you will not get into an accident and need to file a claim anytime soon. If you are correct, you will start raking in the monthly savings on the premium.

3. Simply Call and Ask

It's the oldest trick in the book. Just pick up the phone, call your insurance company and tell them you are unsatisfied and are considering shopping around. You don't have to be serious about leaving, you just have to tell them that you are. You might even be eligible for a safe driver discount or another promotion.

If you want to save money on your automobile insurance, try dropping coverage or raising your deductible. If you are still unsatisfied even after calling your current provider, perhaps it's time to start talking to another automobile insurance agent near you.
